Carlisle MP backs bid to block seal imports
Last updated 13:06, Wednesday, 06 May 2009
Carlisle MP Eric Martlew has backed a motion supporting a European Parliament bid to ban the trade in seal products.
A vote is expected this month that could end Europe’s involvement in what has been described as the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet.
The vote follows a decision by the Internal Market Committee which rejected labelling in favour of a ban on seal products in Europe.
Mr Martlew has signed an early day motion at Westminster backing the European move, which would ban seal products from being sold in the EU and bringing the continent into line with the United States, which has had a ban on all seal imports since 1972.
The MP said: “This is a major opportunity to close loopholes and stop this unacceptably cruel trade throughout the European Union once and for all – sending a clear message that Europe wants no further part in this.”
this is another major victory for my hat , sod you carlisle people the seals are worth lots more !!
